What a productive meeting! Thanks to Bob for outlining as we went at warp speed.
Thanks! THis really helps since I missed the meeting.
I was thinking about how our methods of instruction / guidance of student learning will constantly change as technology and research on best teaching practices advances. Maybe we acknowledge in the curriculum section OR the technology section that we teach students how to learn in addition to a curriculum of facts. This is not earth shattering, I realize, but learning how to learn is important. To be lifelong learners...I have heard that before and definitely agree with that as part of the philosophy of our teaching practices. It will definitely be important to learn flexibility in a world where so much is changing so fast. I remember the idea that jobs that many of our students will hold, have not yet been created! so learning how to learn and being able to adapt and apply one's knowledge are important.
One last thought: to include more info on possible jobs for students. It is something I often feel is missing in education: great we learn all these facts, pass the tests, but how will they use it in the "real world?" What can you do for a career if you like a certain subject...
my 2 cents...today looks like it shoudl be another productive day :)
So, I am afraid my weakness is writing briefly! I think our points are important and I hate to omit any parts. I don't think we are being too specific by stating our considerations or by clarifying standardized format and flexible implementation...so here is my attempt. If I come up with anything better/ shorter I will blog again. good luck Monday! I look forward to reading the blog...
Review curriculum in a coordinated approach, with standardized format and flexible implementation across disciplines (considering: scope and sequence, global perspective, synchronization with IB, whole child education, and continuing assessment)
(DRAFT)
#6 Learning Enrichment, support and Differentiated instruction
Goal: To provide tools and techniques that enable our teachers to maximize our students' potential.
Rationale: As individuals, our students gain knowledge and proficiency through different methods and modes (paths) of instruction. Furthermore, we recognize that a student's academic and social levels are unique. Therefore, we need to identify and match the modes of learning to each student on a continual basis. (Differential Instruction)
Implementation:
A.) Provide teachers with the tools necessary to identify different learning modes and verify that curriculum is designed to adapt to these learning modes.
B.)Collaborate with cross-curricular planning, identify how to challenge each student to the best of their ability. Integrate best teaching practices in current research/ literature. Create interesting and engaging lessons that appeal to listeners of multiple intelligences.
C.) Explore and identify appropriate methods of challenge or remedial academic support for our students.
D.) Explore and identify appropriate methods of remedial support for students with needs:
i. Emotional
ii. Organizational
iii. Behavioral
Re: jen's and GeneT's posts of 19 April. Well done!
Question for Jen: Do we want to add "and divisions" after "flexible implementation across disciplines" or is that implied?
Question for Gene" Goal 6 B, last sentence.. Perhaps "learners of multiple intelligences"?
Goal Statement for Technology: Explore and implement appropriate technology for improving student access to data, communications and the possibilities of extending the student day both time-wise and across technology resources. Provide technology to teachers as appropriate for supporting the student uses of technology and to facilitate the teacher’s emerging collaborative leader and coaching roles in the classroom. Continue with the consolidation and integration efforts of the new school information system, with additions for Admission, Development integration, On-line Community and the Business Office. Recognize that technology is always changing and support an on-going program of professional development that addresses the changes in a timely manner.
Rational Paragraph for Technology: Our students are truly “Digital Natives” and are using many facets of Technology in ways we never thought about. Their minds are wired for this, and our goal must be to help prepare them, using tools they are growing up with, to learn how to cope with problems of the future that we cannot envision. This means teachers must turn to a paradigm where they cannot always be the “Sage on the Stage”, but must take on more the role of coach and collaborative facilitator, a role where the students take some of the lead in learning and the teacher is the guide. Our new school information system was envisioned as a tool to consolidate the many databases that grew up over the last 10 years, and we must continue working toward that end, eventually encompassing all the offices of the school. This will be the best we can do to help our teachers be the best they can be in the classrooms. Teachers and staff cannot just absorb all these changes by osmosis. Even more professional development, and perhaps a “train the trainer” type environment, will be needed to ensure the future success of all our faculty and staff, and ultimately the success of our students.
